Uno dei capitoli più affascinanti della storia dell’arte italiana riguarda la nascita del soggetto della natura morta che avvenne nel frizzante clima culturale romano dell’ultimo decennio del XVI secolo. \r\n\r\nLa rivoluzione iconografica e concettuale della natura morta nella pittura italiana si deve a Caravaggio che, intorno al 1597-1598, dipinse a Roma la celeberrima Canestra conservata alla Pinacoteca Ambrosiana di Milano.\r\nL’opera sancisce di fatto la nascita del nuovo genere della natura morta, inteso quale rappresentazione fedele e oggettiva di un brano di natura completamente svincolato dalla figura umana. Per la prima volta le umili “cose di natura” assurgono al ruolo di protagoniste della rappresentazione pittorica, dal momento che per il Merisi non esisteva distinzione tra “pittura alta” di historia e “inferior pittura”.\r\nSe Caravaggio licenziò l’archetipo della natura morta italiana, il Maestro di Hartford (pittore attivo nella cerchia del Cavalier d’Arpino che sicuramente vide e si ispirò alle opere del genio lombardo) si guadagnò un ruolo chiave per la diffusione della nuova iconografia, essendo il più antico specialista di still life attivo a Roma tra XVI e XVII secolo. Oltre ai due capolavori della Galleria Borghese, alla tela eponima del Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art di Hartford e all’Allegoria della Primavera (ultimata da Carlo Saraceni), il volume che accompagna la straordinaria mostra romana riunisce altri quattro dipinti del Maestro di Hartford, rinnovando l’appassionante giallo del mondo dell’arte legato a questo misterioso pittore. Attraverso le opere di artisti che, da un lato seguirono la lezione del Maestro di Hartford, dall’altro frequentarono l’Accademia di pittura dal vero, viene quindi indagato come nel secondo decennio del ’600 le nature morte fossero sempre più ricercate dal collezionismo privato, tanto che si venne a creare un vero e proprio mercato.
