Discover the story of Jane Austen’s Emma with this exquisite edition from Union Square & Co.’s Signature Gilded Editions series! The stunning Emma special edition features sprayed edges, color end pages, a built-in ribbon bookmark, and embossed foil cover. The beautiful design and attention to detail set this special edition book apart, whether you’re reading for the first time or building a library of your favorite classic literature books.\n  \n Handsome, clever, and rich, Emma Woodhouse delights in interfering in the romantic lives of others. But when she ignores the warnings of her good friend Mr. Knightley and attempts to arrange a suitable match for her protégée, Harriet Smith, her carefully laid plans soon unravel and have consequences that she never expected.\n  \n Though not widely recognized during her lifetime, Jane Austen has become one of England's most renowned novelists. Born in 1775, Austen lived a quiet life and began writing in her youth, though she did not publish until 1811 with the anonymous release of Sense and Sensibility. This was followed by three novels before her death in 1817: Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816). Austen is known for her satirical portraits of social customs and marriage rituals, though she wrote during the passionate Romantic period. Some view her as aligned with earlier eighteenth-century ideals of reason and propriety. However, her witty heroines also reflect an emerging feminism and intelligence that contrasted with women's confined roles. While her endings espouse marriage, novels like Emma provoke questions about women's fulfillment and Austen's own views. Through her rich domestic portraits and investigations of social mores, Austen captured the constrictions on women's lives with insight that still resonates centuries later.

The text of the Fourth Edition of the Norton Critical Edition of Emma is based on the 1816 edition published by John Murray. New material includes Austen’s correspondence with her publisher about the business of writing, revealing Austen’s view of her own writing and career. In addition, there are two sets of verses—“Kitty, A Fair But Frozen Maid” and “Robin Adair”—referenced in Emma as well as responses (1815–1950) to Austen and her writing from, among others, Charlotte Brontë, Juliet Pollock, Virginia Woolf, D. W. Harding, and Edmund Wilson.\n \n “Reviews and Criticism” includes twelve major interpretations of the novel, nine of them new to the Fourth Edition.

This book is essential for anyone interested in learning about the therapeutic potential of orthodox and state-of-the-art supports for autistics. Using research evidence, supports are rated using a Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Tin category system. ‘Gold’ is extremely promising and use with confidence, whereas ‘Tin’ is extremely unsafe and potentially life threatening. This book, however, is more complex than just presenting literature reviews about supports for autistics and then rating the efficacy of the support. In addition to this, the insights and experiences of autistics about the autism supports examined are presented. Such testimonials provide an insider perspective from those who ultimately stand to benefit or suffer after receiving a support – namely autistics themselves.

Jane Austen gave life to the fictional Watson family in 1803, but sadly abandoned them five chapters in. Acclaimed author Joan Aiken completes their story in her ingenious novel, Emma Watson.\n\nEmma Watson has been brought up by her aunt in a wealthy and refined household, an educated lifestyle far removed from her widowed father and five siblings. So when her aunt enters into an imprudent second marriage, nineteen-year-old Emma is sent back home and must join her sisters in their pursuit of a husband . . .\n\nAiken, author of The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, takes on the fate of Austen's characters with confidence and skill, flawlessly entwining themes of loss and love together in this stunning regency pastiche.\n\n'Joan Aiken's invention seemed inexhaustible, her high spirits a blessing, her sheer storytelling zest a phenomenon. She was a literary treasure, and her books will continue to delight for many years to come' - Philip Pullman

«Quali notizie?»

Emma is considered by many readers to be Jane Austen's crowning achievement, a timeless comedy of manners that lays bare the limits on women's autonomy in Regency England. The disparity between Emma Woodhouse's self-confidence and self-knowledge, and her determination to arrange marriages for her friends while avoiding one for herself, leads to a painful series of misunderstandings for everyone who suffers from her well-meaning altruism - and with Mr Knightley being the only person of her acquaintance who has the good sense to challenge her, Emma must eventually recognize her match in every sense.\n\nLong praised for its rich detail and perfect craftsmanship, Emma is one of those classic masterpieces that readers go back to again and again for its inexhaustible fund of humanity.

A bold, witty and fresh adaptation of Jane Austen's novel which, while thoroughly modern, retains the spirit and much of the language of the original.\n\n\n\nIt is night-time and an exhausted Jane Austen sleeps over the recently completed manuscript of her novel Emma. Her four nieces steal in and decide to act out the text and, after her initial anger on being wakened, Jane herself takes the role of Mr Knightley. The excitable teenage girls often try to take the story into their own realms of fantasy but are always brought back to the real text by Jane.\n\n\n\nThis adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma, by Doon MacKichan and Martin Millar, was first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 1999, transferring to the Tricycle Theatre, London, in September.

HarperCollins is proud to present its range of best-loved, essential classics.\n\n\n \n 'The real evils, indeed, of Emma's situation were the power of having rather too much her own way, and a disposition to think a little too well of herself...'\n \n\n\n Beautiful, rich, self-assured and witty, Emma Woodhouse delights in matchmaking those around her, with no apparent care for her own romantic life. Taking young Harriet Smith under her wing, Emma sets her sights on finding a suitable match for her friend. Chided for her mistakes by old friend Mr Knightley, it is only when Harriet starts to pursue her own love interests that Emma realises the true hidden depths of her own heart.\n\n\n Delightful, engaging and entertaining, and with a dazzling gallery of characters, Emma is arguably Austen's most well-loved social comedy.
