Protagonista è uno sceneggiatore scontroso e male in arnese che si fa chiamare Shane, che di solito viene pagato per rivedere e riscrivere sceneggiature altrui. Il problema è che ciò che scrive, o anche solo ciò che ha immaginato di scrivere, diventa vero. E siccome per lo più scrive sceneggiature noir, presto si trova in un sacco di guai: la sovrapposizione di finzione e realtà è graduale, ma progressiva e inarrestabile. E il finale è sconosciuto persino a lui.
