Andare nello spazio oggi non è più una novità e, anzi, secondo molti presto sarà un'attività quasi di routine, destinata non solo a piloti, scienziati e specialisti, ma anche a facoltosi turisti. Ma negli anni '60 la situazione era ben diversa, e non fu per niente facile passare dalle prime capsule sperimentali alle navette spaziali. Tra tutte le persone che finora hanno avuto il privilegio di volare oltre i vincoli terrestri, una delle più interessanti è senza dubbio l'astronauta statunitense John W. Young, entrato a far parte della NASA nel 1962. Da quei primi anni avventurosi, in cui lanciarsi nello spazio a bordo delle capsule Gemini era un grande rischio, per quanto calcolato, Young è passato alle celebri missioni Apollo, circumnavigando la Luna e successivamente facendo escursioni sulla sua superficie, sia a piedi che con il caratteristico rover lunare. In seguito la NASA decise di inaugurare lo Space Shuttle, la celeberrima navetta spaziale, senza compiere preventivamente lanci di prova senza equipaggio. E John W. Young era ai comandi di quel primo Shuttle. Negli anni successivi Young ha continuato a lavorare per la NASA, occupandosi soprattutto di sicurezza degli equipaggi. Questo libro descrive minuziosamente tutto ciò che è accaduto a terra e nello spazio durante quarant'anni di attività della NASA, narrato da uno dei protagonisti. Un volume imperdibile per gli appassionati di astronautica, impreziosito da 220 fotografie, molte delle quali inedite e alcune fornite direttamente dalla famiglia del comandante Young, un gran numero di note esplicative (per la maggior parte scritte dall'autore), una prefazione dell'astronauta Michael Collins, una breve postfazione scritta dalla moglie di Young per l'edizione italiana e infine una verifica minuziosa dei numerosi dettagli tecnici effettuata da Paolo Attivissimo, noto giornalista ed esperto di missioni spaziali.

Unofficially they called themselves the TFNG, or the Thirty-Five New Guys. Officially, they were NASA’s Group 8 astronauts, selected in January 1978 to train for orbital missions aboard the Space Shuttle.
